Are you going to extend SOM? Namely, have you any plans to use hexagonal structure or to extend visualization (SOM_PAK-style-like)?

What do you mean by "hexagonal structure" and "SOM_PAK" ? I would be curious about it ;-)
RapidMiner uses rectangular grid. Sometimes hexagonal grid is better. The example can be seen here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-organizing_map (first plot of this article)/
I have found three som-related packages under "R", and this PDF mentioning them : http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&;rct=j&q=som_pak%2Br-cran&source=web&cd=6&ved=0CFQQFjAF&url=http%3A%2F%2Fr-kohonen.googlecode.com%2Fsvn-history%2Fr2%2Ftrunk%2Fkohonen%2Finst%2Fdoc%2Fkohonen-manual.pdf&ei=FSqpTvzAHcT0-gaa7bWvDw&usg=AFQjCNFhPHHZoGVfB26UxXCUgHFYFYVzkA
Since RapidMiner allows coding in "R" language, it would be useful to use them.
Would these packages answer your question ? Maybe a new operator called "RPackageLoader" under RM would useful ?
Cheers,
