Well, I finally was able to get the Image Miner 1.3.3 extension to install on my Mac OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) system.  I followed the following steps:

1) upgraded to OSX 10.7.2 (Lion)
2) installed newest version of XCode
3) installed latest version of Java for Mac  (Oracle JDK7 Mac OS X Port Developer Preview Release found here:  [(http://jdk7.java.net/macportpreview/)]
4) go to /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines directory and double click on JDK 1.7.0 Developer Preview
5)  In the Java Preferences window that appears, make sure that Java SE 6 is disabled or make sure that it is lower in order of loading than Java SE 7

After doing all of the above, the Image Miner 1.3.3 extension loaded without causing RapidMiner to hang-up.

Now I just need to figure out how to use the image miner extension processes.

This task of getting the ImageMiner extension to load took me several days to figure out and perform, so I hope this will save someone else a chunk of time figuring it out for themselves.
