Boosted Gradient Tree

Hi !
I used the boosted gradient tree model in a prediction goal. However, I don't understand how it works and I need to explain it in my master's thesis. Could you explain me easily how a boosted gradient tree works and why to choose this method instead of a classic regression tree?
Thanks a lot for your answer and sorry for the disturbing.

for an easy explanation check out: https://community.rapidminer.com/discussion/36379/a-practical-guide-to-gradient-boosted-trees-part-i-regression
But i highly recommend to quote something like Hastie et.al (which i used to write this) in your thesis.
